What makes the Ferrari SF90 special

The SF90 Stradale was unveiled in 2019, and its name marks the 90th anniversary of Scuderia Ferrari. It was the first Ferrari series production car with a plug-in hybrid powertrain, and for several years it sat at the top of Ferrari's range in terms of performance. The SF90 Spider followed at the end of 2020.

Behind the cabin is a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 producing 780 cv. It works with three electric motors: one between the engine and the gearbox, and two on the front axle. Together they deliver 1,000 cv, and the front motors give the car all-wheel drive and help it put power down cleanly out of corners. The result is 0-100 km/h in 2.5 seconds, 0-200 km/h in 6.7 seconds for the Stradale and a top speed of 340 km/h.

The battery also lets the SF90 drive on electricity alone for roughly 25 km, at up to 135 km/h. In practice that means you can leave a hotel driveway or cruise through a quiet residential area in near silence, then switch to hybrid or performance mode when the road opens up. Driving modes are chosen with the eManettino on the steering wheel: eDrive, Hybrid, Performance and Qualify.

SF90 Stradale or SF90 Spider?

The two cars share the same powertrain and the same 2.5-second sprint to 100 km/h. The Stradale is the coupe, slightly lighter and a little sharper, with a 0-200 km/h time of 6.7 seconds against about 7.0 for the Spider. The Spider adds an aluminium retractable hard top that opens or closes in about 14 seconds, so you get a closed coupe in the midday heat and an open car for the evening. In Dubai, many clients choose the Spider for sunset drives and the Stradale for a more focused feel.

Driving the SF90 in Dubai

Dubai has wide, well-kept roads, but they are also closely monitored. Speed limits are clearly posted and enforced by fixed and mobile cameras, so the SF90's performance is something to enjoy in short, legal bursts rather than flat out. A few routes our clients like:

  • Sheikh Zayed Road – the city's main artery, lined with towers from Downtown to Dubai Marina. Ideal for a night drive with the skyline lit up, preferably outside rush hour.
  • Jumeirah Beach Road – slower and more relaxed, past beaches, cafes and the Burj Al Arab. A good place for the Spider with the roof down.
  • Palm Jumeirah – the crescent road and the approach to Atlantis make a classic photo backdrop.
  • Jebel Jais and Hatta – for a longer day, the mountain road up Jebel Jais in Ras Al Khaimah and the Hajar mountain roads towards Hatta offer real bends and elevation changes. Keep the daily mileage allowance in mind and start early to avoid the heat.

Summer temperatures can pass 45 °C. The SF90 copes well, but we suggest early-morning or evening drives in the hottest months, both for comfort and for better photographs.

Occasions for renting an SF90

  • Weddings – an SF90 Spider makes an elegant arrival car for the couple, with the roof open for photos.
  • Business and corporate events – for meetings, launches or welcoming a client, the Stradale makes a confident but understated statement.
  • Photo and video shoots – influencers, brands and production companies book the SF90 for its distinctive shape, especially its rear end and lighting.
  • Birthdays and anniversaries – a few hours or a full day behind the wheel is a memorable gift.
  • Proposals – a sunset drive to a quiet beach or a viewpoint on the Palm, with the roof down, sets the scene.

If you only need the car for a short event, such as a ceremony or a shoot, ask about hourly rental when you request a quote.

Rental requirements in Dubai

Requirements vary slightly between suppliers and vehicles, but for a supercar like the SF90 you should expect the following:

  • Minimum age – 21 years; for some high-performance models it can be higher, and we confirm it in your quote (see our rental conditions).
  • Driving licence – a valid licence is required. Tourists from many countries can drive in the UAE on their home licence; visitors from other countries need an International Driving Permit alongside it.
  • Documents – passport and visa or entry stamp for visitors; Emirates ID and UAE licence for residents.
  • Security deposit – a refundable deposit or a pre-authorisation on a credit card, released after the rental once tolls and any fines have been checked.
  • Tolls and fines – Salik road tolls and any traffic fines incurred during the rental are charged to the renter.
  • Insurance – the car comes with comprehensive insurance; the excess and conditions are explained before you sign.
  • Mileage – rentals include a daily kilometre limit, and extra kilometres are charged.

SF90 compared with the Ferrari 296

The closest relative of the SF90 is the Ferrari 296, Ferrari's other plug-in hybrid berlinetta. The 296 uses a 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6 and a single electric motor, drives the rear wheels only and produces 830 cv. It is lighter, more playful and a little less intense, which some drivers prefer on winding roads.

The SF90 is the more powerful and more technical of the two. All-wheel drive makes its acceleration feel almost effortless, and it has the more dramatic presence. If you want the strongest straight-line performance and the feeling of driving Ferrari's hybrid flagship of recent years, choose the SF90; if you want a compact, agile hybrid Ferrari, the 296 is worth considering. Ferrari has since introduced the 849 Testarossa as the next step in its high-performance hybrid range.
